In 2019 a specialist team came together to design an edible food forest on 4 acres of the farm. We have since planted over 1500 items and are continuing to add to this year on year.
Our Food Forest is an area of land that is inhabited by trees, shrubs, berries and bushes all indigenous to the UK. 80% of everything planted are edible and has nutritional or medical purposes. The remaining 20% are nitrogen fixing trees or plants to enhance the yields on the fruiting trees.
Most species planted are a perennial crop, rather than an annual one, meaning everything grows back year on year. This results in less disruption of the soil and therefore less carbon being released from the soil into the atmosphere.
There has been sheep and cattle grazing this field for hundreds of years resulting in rich and alive soil. When we saw the amount of worms underground we knew young trees would flourish.
We take quality and the traceability of food very importantly. Having a food forest on our doorstep ticks these boxes. Knowing the produce we consume hasn’t had, nor needed, any fertilizers and pesticides is something we’re really proud of. We want to be fully fed by the farm by 2025 and having a food forest hugely supports this goal.
